MI’S KOW A AODevelopment Society
The Society was originally established to provide safe, affordable housing for families of First Nations ancestry who were in core need of housing in urban centres on Vancouver Island. Since that time the Society and its mandate have expanded into what is now the M’akola Group of Societies.
The word Mi’s Kow A Ao is the Cree word meaning “Seek and Find.”
This Society existed conceptually from the beginning of the
development of the M’akola Housing
Society in 1984. Mi’s Kow A Ao was incorporated
in 1988, and was established to ensure the appropriate designation
of funds for the management and development of M’akola
projects.
Mi’s Kow A Ao proposes
and oversees the development of new housing projects as funds
become available through Federal or Provincial programs. As
well it oversees, land acquisitions and development, information
for zoning and rezoning, proposal development and negotiation,
construction phase inspections, and verification that conditions
of the Society building specifications are met.
Mi’s Kow A Ao essentially
develops affordable housing, provides assistance to other
non-profit organizations with a similar purpose, it promotes
and develops economic activity appropriate for the urban Aboriginal
community, and promotes the training of its staff.
Mi’s Kow A Ao currently manages 4 properties, which three are rentable houses. There is no application process for these homes, they are advertised in the local newspaper when one comes available.
